Dual-mission colleges offer novel -- and needed -- approach to higher education (opinion)

Today’s postsecondary education system is out of sync with what our nation needs as surveys of students, employers and others show. One reason is that it’s ossified by structures put in place a half century ago, which led many colleges and universities, even new ones, to pursue academic and business models that aligned with strictly designed categories, whether they served students or not.
In recent years a group of colleges started offering a mix of programs challenging the notion that college credentials must come in neat two-year
or four-year packages.
From our respective perches, we believe that these “dual-mission” institutions offer another way forward for higher education in the post-pandemic period. ....

Nominations Accepted for Year-End UW Faculty Awards | News

The University of Wyoming’s Academic Affairs office and the Faculty Senate’s Faculty Recognition and Development Committee are now accepting nominations for the year-end faculty awards. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 19.
Nominations are for the yearly John P. Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award; George Duke Humphrey Distinguished Faculty Award; Hollon Family Award for Teaching Excellence in Off-Campus Programs; and the John P. Ellbogen Lifetime Teaching Award. Each of the awards carries a stipend.
Nominations, including all letters and supporting materials, can be sent electronically to Mandy Gifford in the Academic Affairs office at mandyj@uwyo.edu. New Orleans = Tulane
New Orleans in 1834 was one of the busiest international port cities in the world. But the city wasn’t just importing goods from across the world, they were also importing deadly diseases like yellow fever, malaria and smallpox. In an effort to treat these diseases, learn more about them and train more doctors, the Medical College of Louisiana was formed.
By 1847, the Medical College of Louisiana was a newly established public institution, the University of Louisiana. But in 1884, wealthy merchant Paul Tulane, a native of Princeton, N.J., wanted to express his appreciation for the city that made him his fortune. He donated more than $1 million in land, cash and securities “for the promotion and encouragement of intellectual, moral and industrial education.” His generous gift transformed the University of Louisiana into Tulane University. FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. - Global warming or climate change. It doesn t matter what you call it. What matters is that right now it is having a direct and dramatic effect on marine environments across our planet.
More immediately pressing than future climate change is the increasing frequency and severity of extreme underwater heatwaves that we are already seeing around the world today, Lauren Nadler, Ph.D., who is an assistant professor in Nova Southeastern University s (NSU) Halmos College of Arts and Sciences . This phenomenon is what we wanted to both simulate and understand.
