Carnegie Mellon Professors Receive National Science Foundation CAREER Awards

Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science March 24 announced that five of the school’s faculty members, including two Indian Americans, were honored with a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program, or CAREER, award.
Among the recipients from CMU were Ameet Talwalker, assistant professor in the Machine Learning Department; and Pravesh Kothari, assistant professor in the Computer Science Department, the university said.
Talwalkar will use his nearly $550,000 CAREER award to expand the use of deep learning.
Deep learning models are typically designed by hand over the course of years to perform a specific task, and leading models have largely been tailored for applications in natural language processing or image recognition. Talwalkar aims to help automate the design of new deep learning models for a diverse set of tasks in the physical and social sciences, the university release said. ....

Splice Machine’s Monte Zweben explains how feature stores can help cut down the monotonous parts of a data scientist’s job.
Many people pursue a career in data science because they love solving problems. But something called the Groundhog Day effect can limit that, according to Monte Zweben, CEO of real-time AI company Splice Machine.
Zweben, who previously worked as the deputy chief of AI at NASA’s Ames Research Center and sits on the advisory board for Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science, believes feature stores can help. ....

ELWOOD, NY Rithika Narayan, a senior at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, was selected as a 2021 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar, according to the school district.
Rithika s project is Machine Learning on Crowd-Sourced Data to Highlight Coral Disease. She is among 300 high school seniors who were selected as scholars from 1,760 applications. The Regeneron Science Talent Search provides students with an opportunity to present their research on a national stage while celebrating the hard work of young scientists.
Rithika researched how machine learning, which focuses on the development of computer programs and artificial intelligence, can be used to address environmental concerns. In this case, she modified the Facebook algorithm, Mask R-CNN, to detect the presence of different coral diseases. ....
