Kicking off this July and running through early fall, the Hudson Valley Picture Show will pop up at some of the Hudson Valley’s most iconic locations, screening both new-release and classic films at spots like Kaatsbaan, Opus 40, the Bearsville Center, the Omega Institute, and the City of Kingston. The entire season is being sponsored by Rhinebeck-based artisanal ice cream purveyors Del’s Roadside. Craving the Before Times theater experience with popcorn and surround sound? Upstate Films is aiming to resume film screenings at their flagship theater in Rhinebeck in early summer. And until then, you can rent out the entire theater for a private party of up to 30 people for $525 ($450 for members). Pack the house and split the bill and it’ll be cheaper than going to the movies in New York City. Popcorn is even included. click to enlarge Built originally as a Grange Hall in 1903, the building that houses the Moviehouse in Millerton has been a community hub from the start. In time, it was converted into a cinema with a ballroom upstairs. The only movie theater in the area, the Moviehouse showed a wide range of films, 365 days a year since its birth in 1978 until COVID shut it down last March. But now, the small theater is slated to reopen by mid-June, with new proprietors David Maltby and Chelsea Altman at the helm. “When I made the decision to find new leadership for The Moviehouse, I looked for people who shared our passion and enthusiasm for the cinema, art, and community,” says previous owner Carol Sadlon, who ran the Moviehouse for 43 years with her late husband Robert. She found what she was looking for in Altman and Maltby, an energized young New York couple with ties to the Millerton area. ....
