A 57-year-old Caroline County man is charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
(Caroline County)- The Caroline Sheriff's Office says a man accused of assaulting a McDonald's employee with a hammer in Caroline on Saturday was arrested a day later in the woods along Interstate 95 not far from the restaurant. Police say Bertram Smithen of Lorton walked into the McDonald's in Ladysmith and attacked an employee with a hammer Saturday evening. That prompted a manhunt for the 48-year-old that included K-9 units as well as searches involving a drone and helicopter. Sunday afternoon deputies said a caller spotted Smithen in the woods along Interstate 95 near the Ladysmith exit. He was arrested without incident.

A flag that some believe is a symbol of support for police officers and others criticize as being adopted by white supremacists has flown over the Caroline County Sheriffâs Office for the past several months.
The Caroline County Branch NAACP has requested Sheriff Tony Lippa denounce the co-option of the flag by extremists. Lippa did agree to remove a âBlue Lives Matterâ sign that was on the officeâs grounds before it was replaced with a sign reminding citizens to âSupport Those Who Protect You.â
Lippaâs decision to remove the âBlue Lives Matterâ sign came after hearing from Black community members and meeting with the NAACP in January.
