Man Who Attacked Caroline McDonald's Worker With A Hammer Arrested

(Caroline County)- The Caroline Sheriff's Office says a man accused of assaulting a McDonald's employee with a hammer in Caroline on Saturday was arrested a day later in the woods along Interstate 95 not far from the restaurant. Police say Bertram Smithen of Lorton walked into the McDonald's in Ladysmith and attacked an employee with a hammer Saturday evening. That prompted a manhunt for the 48-year-old that included K-9 units as well as searches involving a drone and helicopter. Sunday afternoon deputies said a caller spotted Smithen in the woods along Interstate 95 near the Ladysmith exit. He was arrested without incident. ....

NAACP calls on Caroline Sheriff's Office to denounce 'co-option' of 'thin blue line' flag

A flag that some believe is a symbol of support for police officers and others criticize as being adopted by white supremacists has flown over the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office for the past several months.
The Caroline County Branch NAACP has requested Sheriff Tony Lippa denounce the co-option of the flag by extremists. Lippa did agree to remove a “Blue Lives Matter” sign that was on the office’s grounds before it was replaced with a sign reminding citizens to “Support Those Who Protect You.”
Lippa’s decision to remove the “Blue Lives Matter” sign came after hearing from Black community members and meeting with the NAACP in January. ....
