The first player in WHL history to be granted exceptional status was named the league’s top first-year player Wednesday.
Regina Pats centre Connor Bedard was named the WHL’s rookie of the year after leading the league’s freshmen in scoring with 28 points during the 2020-21 season.
The 15-year-old — the first WHLer to be granted exceptional player status by the Canadian Hockey League — had 12 goals and 16 assists in 15 games in the East Division bubble at the Brandt Centre. He tied Ryker Evans for the Pats’ scoring lead.

While there weren’t any fans to salute following the Regina Pats’ final game of the year, the team did so to recognize the end of one of the most unique seasons in WHL history.
Due to COVID-19 measures, the Pats — and all of the teams in Saskatchewan and Manitoba — played an abbreviated season in a bubble in Regina without any fans in attendance at any of the games.
While it was tough being away from family, staying in small dorm rooms and only leaving to go to the rink, the Pats are grateful to have had a chance to hit the ice this season.

Zack Smith recorded his first career WHL hattrick, but it wasn’t enough as the Regina Pats fell 6-4 to the Winnipeg Ice Tuesday night, to wrap up their 24 game hub season at the Brandt Centre.
Carter Massier scored the other goal for the Pats, who finish the year (9-12-2-1).
Then end of the season also marks the end of junior hockey for Pats 20-year-old’s Roddy Ross, Carson Denomie and Kyle Walker.
Two more games will be played Wednesday before the lights go out at the Brandt Centre.
Saskatoon takes on Brandon at 4:00 p.m., then it’s Swift Current and Prince Albert at 8:00 p.m..

Regina Pats forward Carson Denomie is one of the WHL’s top goal scorers, but his goal for the last two games of his junior career has nothing to do with getting on the scoresheet.
“I just want to have fun with them. There’s no playoffs this year, (but that) doesn’t mean you don’t have anything to play for. You still have your pride and to give all the people watching (online) a good performance,” Denomie said following a 4-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday at the Brandt Centre. “I’m hoping that it’s going to be fun.”

Broncos finally solve Regina Pats
April 23, 2021
The Swift Current Broncos finally solved the Regina Pats for a 4-2 win on Thursday to avoid a season series sweep.
The Broncos got goals from four different players, including the game winner 8:04 into the third period when defenseman Owen Williams faked the point shot and passed to a driving Caleb Wyrostock, who tipped home his fifth goal of the season.
Playing their fifth game in seven days, the Broncos took their first lead with 1:19 remaining in the first period when Michael Farren followed up on a rebound and shoveled the puck home for his eighth goal of the season.

The Regina Pats were able to finally best their rivals, the Saskatoon Blades, for the first time in the WHL hub.
Regina posted a 4-2 victory Tuesday at the Brandt Centre.
“Against them, it’s big because they had our number,” Pats head coach Dave Struch said after the game. “They pushed back on us and we responded well.
“I know they had some guys out of the lineup but they play a really good game — they play hard and they play physical. We did some things that we have seen flashes of in this shortened season and we’ve built on last game and did things right.”
