For the next two years — Brandon, Sharon, and their children will stay at the furnished three-bedroom home and only have to pay utilities.
The Oasis, built in the 1920s, used to be the old YMCA building in Highland Park. While operating as a homeless shelter, about 50 men on parole are housed in the building.
Homelessness is a rising concern across metro Detroit and what's making it worse is the limited number of shelters available.
"We need to treat the real issue of homelessness," he said. "We got mental health, we got affordable housing which we don’t have enough of, and then substance abuse and alcoholism."
