US activists and researchers say far-right backers have employed Twitter’s new picture permission policy to protect themselves from scrutiny and to harass opponents.
Twitter acknowledged on Friday that a new policy it unveiled this week to protect users from harassment is being abused by malicious actors — days after journalists, left-wing activists and self-described 'sedition hunters' reported their accounts had been locked for sharing publicly available images of anti-maskers, anti-vaccine protesters and suspected Capitol insurrectionists.
Twitter accidentally suspended a number of accounts after far-right extremists attempted to abuse its new private media policy to remove pictures of themselves at hate rallies. The platform said the issue has since been resolved and that it will conduct an internal review of the incident.
