Local leaders said the inaugural countywide day of action, held May 11, attracted more than 30 participating organizations from the Pajaro Valley to Davenport and at least 431 volunteers that managed to collect more than 1,548 pounds of litter collectively.
With 4Leaf's contract set to sunset in June, the $600,000 extension will allow the one-stop-shop services offered through the county's Recovery Permit Center to continue through Dec. 31 while county planners move toward a more integrated model.
The county's inaugural Cleanup Day, featuring dozens of events and volunteer opportunities from Watsonville to Davenport, is happening May 11 in an effort to, as organizers have put it, make Santa Cruz the "cleanest county in the state."
The board, acting as the local lead for the project, previously reviewed the segments at its March 26 meeting and while it approved a series of environmental documents, it declined to move forward with the project itself, citing concerns about tree removal and cost overruns and asked its staff to explore ways to limit both.
The series, with episodes released every Sunday of the month, will feature speakers from 15 community organizations including Monarch Services, CASA of Santa Cruz, First 5 Santa Cruz County, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.
"I don't think there's any impacts yet," Santa Cruz County Deputy Director of Parks Rebecca Hurley told the Sentinel. "I would anticipate if we can't come to, you know, an approving action soon and have to ask for an extension there could be some negative impacts about that."
The preliminary changes come amid a significant and ongoing rollout of BCycle, an e-bike rideshare program, across the county. After introducing about 400 bicycles and 800 docks in the city of Santa Cruz last summer, BCycle will add almost 600 e-bikes across in county in 2024.
A pair of segments from the high-profile Coastal Rail Trail project running through Santa Cruz's Mid County region are in limbo after the county Board of Supervisors rejected a majority of recommendations from its staff to move the project forward at its meeting Tuesday.
