SANTA FE — The number of new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico has ticked up to its highest rate since March, driven by elevated infection rates in several counties with lagging vaccination rates.
While statewide infection rates are still far lower than the mid-November peak, the recent increase in cases comes amid a nationwide spread of the highly contagious Delta variant that has also made its way into New Mexico.

NMSU finalizes budget cuts resulting in 57 positions being eliminated

NMSU finalizes budget cuts resulting in 57 positions being eliminated
LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State University may have to cut about $11 million for the fiscal year 2021, resulting in 57 positions being eliminated.
University administrators — President John Floros, Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance Andy Burke and Vice President for Student Success Renay Scott — laid out the cuts in a virtual town hall Tuesday.
The cuts — necessary after the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on the economy — are less than what was expected months ago, administrators said.
The university enacted a hiring freeze and launched a voluntary retirement program last year that was meant to keep layoffs at a minimum.
