Major Dianne Feinstein appointed him in 1980 less than a year after the riots following the Involuntary Manslaughter conviction of dan white who gunned down mayor gasconi and harvey milk. Leslie led the city through many years including many big scandals. Reporter murphys six years as chief was born from turmoil.
