More than 440 activists, politicians, artists and intellectuals from different countries have signed a public letter addressed to the government of President Joe Biden, which will be published in the American newspaper New York Times this Friday (23). The document criticizes the trade and economic embargo that the United States has imposed on Cuba for more than six decades.
Posted as a paid ad in the newspaper, the text urges Biden to cancel the more than 200 sanctions lifted by his predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, who has stepped up the embargo on the island in rhetoric and in practice. “There is no reason to maintain the Cold War policies that lead the United States to treat Cuba as an enemy rather than a neighboring country,” one passage reads.

Today, We Celebrate the Carnation Revolution - International Viewpoint

Portugal
Sunday 25 April 2021, by Raquel Varela
Today, marks the anniversary of Portugal’s liberation from dictatorship. On April 25, 1974, soldiers from the dissident Armed Forces Movement (MFA) removed dictator Marcelo Caetano, demanding that Portugal abandon its failed colonial wars in Africa. A regime dating back to the age of Mussolini and Hitler had finally met its end, along with Europe’s last old-style empire.
The revolt within the army was the immediate trigger for the regime’s downfall, and the images of joyous citizens handing carnations to troops would come to symbolize the birth of Portuguese democracy itself. Yet the Carnation Revolution that continued until November 1975 was more than just a coup d’état, or even a transition to a new parliamentary order.

11 Afro-Brazilian Percussionists You Need To Know
These Brazilian percussionists have broken sound frontiers, invented new instruments and thrilled musical giants such as Michael Jackson and Sarah Vaughan.
It isn't rare to forget that excellent drummer's name. While singers, band vocalists, and even composers are venerated among amateur music audiences, percussionists very often go unnoticed. Perhaps because percussionists are not usually the protagonists on stage, their identities — or even their importance — sometimes fall from the audience's sight.
But when it comes to Brazil's African-influenced music cultures, percussion is by no means secondary. To get into the roots of Afro-Brazilian music is to understand that percussionists such as

Under The Influence: Carwyn Ellis

Carwyn Ellis released
Joia!, an album unlike any other in that it was heavily influenced by Brazilian music and recorded in Rio, but with lyrics in Welsh; a true transatlantic collaboration. For Ellis, who is known in indie pop circles as the front-man for Colorama, and also plays guitar with The Pretenders, the album was the culmination of a burgeoning admiration for Brazilian music. With his Carwyn Ellis & Rio 18 band, he followed that album up with another ,
Mas, released earlier this year, that was once more recorded in Rio (at Audio Rebel), but also hinted at some other Latin American influences outside of Brazil. This Under The Influence is a chance to get to know more about the records and sounds that led to, and influenced, these two records of Ellis, and also find out how Latin American music cast a spell upon him.

Coronavirus: Jair Bolsonaro's ex-supporters yell 'Get out!'

Rio de Janeiro: Meggy Fernandes voted for Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil’s 2018 presidential election, attracted by the far-right former army captain’s promise to shake up a hidebound political establishment mired in endless corruption scandals.
But after watching him jettison his anti-corruption pledges, strike pacts with the politicians he vowed to shun, and, most importantly, botch Brazil’s coronavirus response, Fernandes, 66, now says she was wrong to place her faith in the man some call the Trump of the Tropics.
“I’m so revolted by my vote,” she said in a supermarket carpark in Rio de Janeiro, at an unusual pro-impeachment rally convened by right-wing groups. “Bolsonaro is overseeing a terrible government. He’s doing a disservice to the nation. His handling of the pandemic is completely wrong.“
