Politicizing kids: Politics, social media combine to roil school board races


On April 14, the Linn County Republican Party sent an email to supporters.
“Local elections are coming up soon and we need your help!” it said. “We are positioned to seat solid Republicans on our school boards, fire districts, water districts and more. We need your help to make this happen.”
The email went on to list things supporters could do to help seat Republicans on the nonpartisan governing bodies: put up campaign signs, canvass voters and “dogpile.”

Albany police chief responds to 'back to school' controversy amid social media outrage

The unfolding controversy surrounding the relationship between Greater Albany Public Schools and local police included another development late Wednesday night.
Police Chief Marcia Harnden issued a statement about Albany officers being asked to leave Albany public school campuses during back-to-school celebrations last week. Harnden also asked that people stop spreading “dangerous and hurtful messages” on social media.
“To our students and families of color who may have been upset or had concerns about our presence on the first day of school, we sincerely regret that you did,” Harnden said. “Our intent was to welcome you back and give you a reason to feel safe and welcome.  I m sorry if the experience was negative.” ....
