Local childcare advocates are getting creative in finding ways to address provider shortage

Becker County's childcare shortage has been an ongoing issue since 2018, when it was one of six counties in Minnesota chosen to participate in the Rural Child Care Innovation Program, or RCCIP. Recently, advocates have been taking a more proactive approach to addressing this need, with the establishment of not just one, but two assistance grant programs for new and existing childcare providers, and a new initiative to develop a program for training future childcare providers at Detroit Lakes High School.
