An international team of marine scientists, led by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the Center for Coastal Studies in the USA, has studied the DNA of family groups from four different whale species to estimate their mutation rates. Using the newly determined rates, the group found that the number of humpback whales in the North Atlantic before whaling was 86 percent lower than earlier studies suggested. ....
Fin, blue whales getting tangled in fishing gear in Gulf of St. Lawrence more often than thought: study Between 41 and 57 per cent of fin whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence are getting entangled in fishing gear, a problem previously identified mainly in right whales and humpbacks, according to new research that relied on drones. Scientists say the rates are higher than past estimates and likely comparable for blue whales as well. Social Sharing ....
Whale showing scarring A larger proportion of whales than previously thought is being injured by fishing equipment, according to new research led by the University of St Andrews. The research, published in Endangered Species Research, showed that the vast majority of the whale populations in the Gulf of St Lawrence have shown previous entanglement in fishing gear. The team used drones to search for scars on the whales which showed entanglement injuries. In right and humpback whales, between 60 per cent and 80 per cent of the mammals have been entangled at least once in their lifetime. For the larger rorqual whales, like blue and fin, it had been previously assumed that this number was only around ten per cent because they are stronger and might live more offshore, thus less overlapping with fishing. However, the new findings showed that this was in fact a problem of perception rather than reality. ....
