Denver Art Museum debuts "Near East to Far West: Fictions of French and American Colonialism" in March 2023

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) today announced the debut of Near East to Far West: Fictions of French and American Colonialism. This exhibition opens March 5, 2023 and is on view through May 28, 2023, in the Anschutz Gallery on level 2 of the museum’s Hamilton Building. Near East to Far West will be included in general admission, which is free for everyone 18 and under as well as for museum members. ....

Rat Time) returns with a thoroughly entertaining collection of autobiographical comics featuring her distinctive blend of deadpan humor and quirkily sincere flights of fancy. She observes life with husband Scott, pre-teen daughter Xia, and dog Crooky with equal parts appreciation and bemusement. “Xia and I played Barbies more intensely than ever before,” Roberts tells her mother, recalling Xia-as-Barbie improvising her way through a job interview, a scene followed by another in which the dolls awkwardly converse about art (imitating, one assumes, life). In another vignette, Roberts digs into her curious satisfaction at having spent weeks destroying her old sketchbooks and journals: “I’m being more productive whenever I’m not making anything.” Moments in which, for instance, a plate of Christmas cookies slips to the ground, to be picked up and placed in the trash one-by-one, are quiet examples of malaise creeping in. Author: Christine Garnier
Christine Garnier is a Ph.D. candidate in the History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University and was a Smithsonian Institution Predoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, during the 2019-2020 academic year. She holds a B.S. in mathematics from the Catholic University of America and an M.A. in Art History from Tufts University. Her dissertation, titled “Amalgamating the West during the American Silver Age,” focuses on the material histories of silver objects created during the rise of mining in the American West during the nineteenth century, and the importance of bringing the social, political, and ecological histories of these lands into art historical dialogs. She is currently a Wyeth fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art (2020-2022). ....
