The two-story building will include meeting and community rooms, a center for entrepreneurship, indoor playground, a walking track, library and administrative spaces for library staff.
Moorhead City Council members cast a tied vote, with four council members voting in support, two in opposition and two abstaining. Mayor Shelly Carlson broke the tie in favor of the resolution.
“Mayor,” council member Deb White said, “Your actions have been hurtful and have led people to question whether our gestures to reach out to underrepresented communities are merely empty words.”
While the city runs on a “lean budget,” council member Deb White said, people who are “struggling to make ends meet” have reached out to her with concerns about the increases.
"While it might just look like cans of food, it’s kindness, it is caring, it’s love, it’s hope," said Melissa Sobolik, CEO of Great Plains Food Bank.
