View Comments U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Cincinnati say they recently found about 34 pounds of liquid ketamine in bottles purporting to hold hand sanitizer. The contraband anesthetic seized is worth nearly $220,000 and was discovered during inspections of South American and African freight bound for California, Customs said in a news release. “Like many anesthetics, ketamine has legitimate medical uses, but it is often misused for its hallucinogenic and sedating effects,” the release said. “Ketamine abuse typically occurs at raves and nightclubs and is commonly used to facilitate sexual assault crimes.” The release said Customs officers in Cincinnati also recently found nearly 30 different kinds of steroids and prescription medications worth about $43,000 in a shipment of a glass anti-fogging product.
View Comments The Newport Southbank Bridge Company has retained an engineering firm to determine the extent of repairs that will be needed to reopen the Purple People Bridge between Newport and Cincinnati. The pedestrian bridge that crosses the Ohio River has been closed since May 11, when a large stone fell into the river from a pier on the north bank. The bridge company said in a news release that WSP USA will evaluate the condition and safety of the span. We once again ask for the public s patience as we work diligently to reopen the popular span, so that it can be enjoyed in the safest manner possible, the release said.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Northern Kentucky counties and Clermont County due to the storms. Showers with a few thunderstorms are expected this afternoon into early this evening. A few of these storms may be strong to severe, with damaging wind being the primary threat, the National Weather Service said. We will see much cooler air starting Friday, forecasters said, which will turn into much below normal temperatures through Sunday morning.
