Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s office responded to a May 20 lawsuit seeking for Medicaid rolls to be opened to 275,000 working-age adults, following a voter-approved constitutional amendment.
Missouri lawmakers were not obligated to fund Medicaid expansion, and the courts cannot force the state to pay the medical bills of people who would be eligible under an initiative that amended the state constitution, the state attorney general’s office argued in documents filed Monday in Cole County Circuit Court.
The filing from Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s office is the state’s response to a lawsuit filed May 20 seeking an order that Medicaid rolls be opened to approximately 275,000 working age adults. ....

Judge Sets Trial Date For Lawsuit Over Missouri Medicaid Expansion

On Wednesday morning, Circuit Judge Jon Beetem met in a conference call with Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s office and attorneys for the three people suing for coverage. In an online notation with the case, Beetem ordered a “hearing on Stipulated Facts.”
That means that there is no dispute about what is happening. Instead, it is a dispute about how the law should be applied.
“Both sides will make their case to the judge and the judge will issue a decision in due course,” Marianna Deal, spokeswoman for Schmitt’s office, wrote in email. “Beyond that, we aren’t going to comment further on pending litigation.” ....

Cole County s Presiding Commissioner says he and other county leaders are working to increase coronavirus vaccinations across the county.
COVID-19 is still our main concern right now. The vaccine is sort of our light at the end of the tunnel but we need to get more vaccine and vaccinate more people, Presiding Commissioner Sam Bushman said Tuesday after the commission meeting.
The county commission met with multiple county department directors Tuesday morning discussing CARES Act funding requests.
Bushman said he s focused on making vaccines available to all county residents. ....
