At least 230 people fatally shot in shootings over Fourth of July weekend


Eight people were wounded early Sunday when a person began shooting toward groups of people near a Fort Worth car wash and multiple people returned fire, police said.
At least 233 people were killed and 618 people were injured by gun violence in more than 500 shootings across the country during the Fourth of July weekend, a 26% drop from last year s holiday weekend, according to the latest data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive.
According to data released Tuesday morning, which looks at shootings from 5 p.m. Friday through Monday, there were 314 fatal shootings with 751 injuries during the same period last year, the GVA said. ....

We need leaders in Washington to wake up to this crisis. Wake up. We cannot police ourselves out of this crisis. One thing is clear, greater access to firearms does not equal greater public safety. Imagine if we were as focused on access to counselling as we are with access to carrying a gun, helping end gun violence means changing the choices people make people who are hurting without hope and think violence is the only means available to them. Law enforcement can do a lot, but we, as a community, have got to start valuing the lives and unequal opportunity that our cities live wit ....
