Chicken Remains in "Magic" Jar Used as an Ancient Curse in Athens

In Athens, Greece, an ancient “magic” jar was found that contained chicken bones and was believed to be used as part of an old curse. The 2,300-year-old ceramic jar with the remains of a dismembered chicken was discovered underneath the floor of the Agora’s Classical Commercial Building (in ancient times, this building was used by craftspeople). In addition to the “magic” jar, a coin was found.
According to archaeologists, the chicken remains were believed to have been used in an ancient curse that was conducted in order to kill or paralyze 55 people in Athens. The reason why experts know the exact number of those that were cursed was because the outer part of the jar once had the names of the 55 individuals. All that remains of the text is a few letters here and there. Experts were able to figure out that the words “we bind” were written in Greek on the jar. Even though the jar was found in 2006, it was only analyzed and the text deciphered recently.

ATHENS, GREECE Jessica Lamont of Yale University has analyzed a ceramic jar holding the bones of a young chicken discovered in 2006 near several burned pyres that contained animal remains under the floor of the Classical Commercial Building of the Agora in Athens, according to a
Live Sciencereport. Lamont said the 2,300-year-old jar had been gouged with a large iron nail and inscribed with the names of more than 55 people and the words “we bind.” The inscriptions were written with a stylus by at least two people with knowledge of how to cast a powerful curse, Lamont explained. She thinks the number of intended victims suggests they may have been witnesses and family members involved in an impending lawsuit concerning the industrial building where the jar was found, but she also noted that several factions were fighting in Athens at the time in the wake of the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. The young chicken’s twisted and pierced head and pierced lower legs may have been intended to incapacitate the people named on the jar, Lamont surmised.
