Only days before he succumbed to leukemia, John Borek was extolling the horridness of certain scenes of the film Tommy with his physician.
There s this scene in the movie, if you Google YouTube plus Ann-Margret plus Tommy plus beans and chocolate, Mr. Borek said.
I think I get it, his doctor at Strong Memorial Hospital answered. It was that bad.
Worse, Mr. Borek said, as he recounted in his online CaringBridge.org journal. Then he added in his journal, I love my doctors.
Two days later, on April 1, he typed, Leukemia 1, John 0. Friends answered online, all pulling for him to survive, with some hoping it was an April Fool s line. On April 3, he died at the age of 71. ....

John Borek, a serious and zany man of the arts, dies at 71

John Borek
One of the final acts of John Borek, one of many acts of his life, was to send 5-foot-tall cardboard cutouts of chocolate rabbits to friends in celebration of Easter, one of his favorite holidays.
Borek, a man of many hats known for his zany theatrics and serious commitment to the Rochester arts and cultural scene, died Saturday. He was 71 and had been ill with leukemia.
He was many things to many people in the city.
There were his 15 years as a legislative aide to former City Councilman Adam McFadden. In February, the City Council proclaimed Feb. 16 as “John W. Borek Day,” celebrating “a life story greater than the sum of all its chapters.” ....
