Coastal News Today | FL - USF model shows path of polluted Piney Point discharge water as it spreads around Tampa Bay

A computer model shows that a plume of wastewater from Piney Point has spread as far north as the Little Manatee River and St. Petersburg, and as far south as the Manatee River, as it slowly heads out toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Research teams from the University of South Florida are using a computer model that forecasts the path of nutrient-rich wastewater discharged into Tampa Bay from the former Piney Point fertilizer plant this month as they study how the polluted water is affecting marine ecosystems.
The forecast shows that a plume of the wastewater will shift back and forth along the eastern shores of middle and lower Tampa Bay, from as far north as the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve and the Little Manatee River south to the northern shores of Robinson Preserve and the Manatee River. The forecast shows varying concentrations of the wastewater have entered important habitats such as Bishop Harbor and the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve.

Piney Point: Suncoast Waterkeeper, Tampa Bay Waterkeeper say DEP failed

Sarasota Herald-Tribune
As wastewater from the old Piney Point fertilizer plant property in Manatee County continued to be pumped out Wednesday at a rate of 38 million gallons a day and dumped into Tampa Bay, state officials announced two companies have been hired to treat the water before discharging.
“The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) tasked two innovative technology companies to initiate nutrient reduction and removal treatments from water on-site prior to discharging to Port Manatee,” DEP said in a press release that provided no other details on the treatment effort.
Funding for the Piney Point cleanup effort also advanced in the Florida Legislature on Wednesday, work was expected to proceed on patching a leak in a wastewater containment pond liner, DEP announced elevated levels of phosphorus were detected around the discharge site and environmentalists criticized past state oversight efforts.

Coastal News Today | FL - Hillsborough Commission ponders legal remedies for Piney Point spill

But he thought better of asking it.
“The more I think about a situation like this, assigning blame can be complex,” White told the rest of the Hillsborough Commission Wednesday afternoon.
But that didn’t stop White from issuing marching orders to County Attorney Christine Beck.
“Be on standby to prepare for any legal recourse that might be necessary here,” he said.
The commission is considering legal remedies because the closed Piney Point phosphate plant in Manatee County is near the Hillsborough border. Quoting state figures, Hillsborough Environmental Protection Commissioner Director Janet Dougherty said at mid-day, 170 million gallons of wastewater have been released into the channel at Port Manatee on Tampa Bay. The state later updated that figure to 173 million gallons. The leaking reservoir held approximately 480 million gallons before the releases began.
