Wearable brain scanner research to examine elderly drivers

Wearable brain scanner research to examine elderly drivers
A wearable brain scanner is being used, for the first time, to investigate the brain activity in elderly people whilst driving a car.
Research led by the University of Nottingham and funded by the UK Quantum Technology Hub Sensors and Timing will explore how neural substrates underling cognitive processing whilst driving, change with age.
Maintaining quality of life for elderly people is an increasing concern given the UK’s ageing population and the findings from this study could enable a new understanding of neural processing, which in turn will enable elderly people to receive the necessary therapies and interventions to help them maintain their driving abilities, and therefore their independence, for longer. ....

How do animals solve problems?

Date Time
How do animals solve problems?
James Cook University researchers believe studying individual animals – rather than groups or species – may unlock the secret of how animals solve problems.
JCU PhD student Misha Rowell said increasing concerns over human-induced rapid environmental change has led to a need to understand how animals will cope with these challenges. She said animals must be able to solve problems to access food and avoid predators, but not all species, populations, or even individuals, can solve problems, or can solve problems in the same way.
“Differences in problem-solving ability could be due to differences in how animals develop and grow, including differences in their genetics, hormones, age, and/or environmental conditions. ....

Joyful Screams Perceived More Strongly than Screams of Fear or Anger

Joyful Screams Perceived More Strongly than Screams of Fear or Anger
The human scream signals more than fear of imminent danger or entanglement in social conflicts. Screaming can also express joy or excitement. For the first time, researchers at the University of Zurich have demonstrated that non-alarming screams are even perceived and processed by the brain more efficiently than their alarming counterparts.

Screaming can save lives. Non-human primates and other mammalian species frequently use scream-like calls when embroiled in social conflicts or to signal the presence of predators and other threats. While humans also scream to signal danger or communicate aggression, they scream when experiencing strong emotions such as despair or joy as well. However, past studies on this topic have largely focused on alarming fear sc ....

NIH experts discuss post-acute COVID-19

HIN
Many people who have COVID-19 make a full recovery and return to their baseline state of health; however, some people have symptoms or other sequelae weeks or months after initial SARS-CoV-2 infection. These heterogeneous symptoms were the subject of the virtual “Workshop on Post-acute Sequelae of COVID-19” hosted on Dec. 2 and 4, 2020, by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), in collaboration with other institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health. A paper published recently in Annals of Internal Medicine describes the workshop. Over 1,200 registered participants including researchers, clinicians, and affected community members discussed what is known about sequelae after COVID-19 and the knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in future research. ....
