Coimbatore: The city corporation has resumed the drive to inspect commercial establishments and other public places to check for violations of Covid-19 guidelines in the wake of a spike in daily count.
On Wednesday, the civic body has collected a fine of Rs 1.03 lakh for violations of Covid-19 protocols.
A city corporation official said, “We have been inspecting commercial establishments and other public places. Penalty will be slapped on the owners of commercial establishments for violations, if any, as it is their responsibility to ensure adherence to Covid protocols by their customers. On Wednesday, we fined both individuals and commercial establishments and collected Rs 1,03,100. The drive will continue.”

71 Indo-Pak war veterans felicitated in district | Coimbatore News


Coimbatore: On the golden jubilee year of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, which came to an end with the surrender of about 93,000 Pakistani soldiers and the liberation of Bangladesh, Brigadier Mahadevan recalled his memories about the Battle of Gangasagar that took place near a railway station on the international border.
As Tripura side was filled with jungle and the other side with paddy fields and marshland, the brigadier said the team had to plan cautiously. Once he, along with two majors, had crossed the border to collect data. He had also infiltrated Gangasagar from the southern side, when the opponents were least expecting it. Despite his severe injury, the brigadier fought the battle till the end and was rescued by the Indian Air Force.

COIMBATORE: For the first time, Isha Yoga Centre’s all-night Mahashivaratri celebration that is filled with music, dance and immersive meditative experience, was held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The entire celebration was live streamed and telecast across 100 channels in multiple languages including English, Hindi, Nepali, Russian and French for its devotees across the world.
Only a few thousands of people were allowed to participate in person at the celebrations after producing Covid negative certificates.
All the government guidelines, including temperature screening, ensuring facemasks and social distance, were adhered to in the event.
The night began with the Linga Bhairavi yatra, followed by Panchbhuta Kriya which was performed by founder of the center Jaggi Vasudev.

Karur man held for GST evasion | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore zonal unit of the Directorate of General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has busted a fake bill trading racket and arrested a Karur-based man for evasion of GST (goods and services tax) to the tune of 40 crore.
The arrested person has been identified as Arunkumar, 35, a resident of Karur. He was produced before the chief judicial magistrate court in Coimbatore on Tuesday afternoon and remanded in judicial custody till March 22. Later, he was lodged at the Udumalpet sub-jail.
A press note issued by the DGGCI on Tuesday said it conducted simultaneous search operations on Monday at the residence cum business premises of the key person of a fake bill trading racket, who had set up multiple fictitious registrations in Salem, Karur Coimbatore and Pollachi to generate and pass on fraudulent input tax credit.

Two Coimbatore cops arrested for taking bribe | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Two special sub-inspectors of police attached to the Variety Hall Road police station in Coimbatore were arrested by DVAC sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,700 from a man for releasing his motorcycle after he was caught for traffic rule violation.
The arrested SSIs were identified as Irulappan,57, and Ganeshan, 53.
Sridhar of Kovaipudur was intercepted by SSI Irulappan in the Variety Hall road police station limits on February 27. The SSI seized the motorcycle from Sridhar for drunken driving.
Irulappan demanded Rs 6,000 for not registering a case and to release the motorcycle.
Sridhar replied that he was not in position to arrange Rs 6,000. Later, the SSI demanded Rs 3,000 to release the vehicle. But Sridhar was not able to pay that amount too.
