Starting in the fall of 2021, FIU is offering a master’s degree in the Internet of Things (IoT) that will prepare graduates for careers in the ever-evolving tech industry, including smart homes, smart grid, smart transportation and smart medical devices.
As part of FIU’s College of Engineering & Computing degree offerings, the graduate program aims to prepare students for jobs in IoT hardware, programming, cybersecurity, communications and entrepreneurship. Graduates of the degree program will be equipped to implement IoT technologies used in daily life, including electric and smart cars, homes, medical devices and city infrastructure. The curriculum further expands on FIU’s bachelor’s degree in Internet of Things, which the university launched in the spring of 2018, becoming one of the first in the nation to offer a bachelor’s degree in the IoT area. ....

Building on South Florida’s momentum around technology and entrepreneurship, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has made a $10 million gift to FIU’s School of Computing and Information Sciences to develop technical talent at scale to meet the demands of industry and Miamians seeking to advance their tech skills.

The investment will catalyze the development of the local tech ecosystem by attracting top faculty researchers in areas such as artificial intelligence, smart robotics, bioinformatics, biodevices, and digital forensics, increase the number of FIU graduates entering these sectors, and strengthen collaboration with industry. In recognition of this gift, FIU will name the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences in the College of Engineering & Computing (CEC). ....

Bi-annual engineering showcase transformed into a virtual event for graduating seniors to present their capstone projects
Engineering students recently came together to present solutions to real-world challenges.
More than 400 engineering and computing students, consisting of 94 teams and seven different majors, participated in this year s Senior Design Showcase on Dec. 4. The students presented their senior projects to professors, recruiters, peers and the community.
The bi-annual event, hosted by the College of Engineering & Computing (CEC), was held on Pathable, a virtual event platform, and ran for approximately six hours. The projects covered a variety of areas, including biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, construction management, civil and environmental engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and the Internet of Things. ....

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security today said that they suspect Russian hackers are behind ongoing cyberattacks on government agencies, private companies and other entities.
