Am 25. Juni 1991 haben Slowenien und Kroatien ihren Ausstieg aus dem Staatsverband Jugoslawien verkündet und ihre Unabhängigkeit erklärt. Die Jugoslawische Armee ließ unmittelbar darauf Panzer an der Grenze auffahren, worauf auch das österreichische Bundesheer mit Truppenverlegungen reagierte. Während Belgrad Slowenien nur wenige Tage später in die Unabhängigkeit entließ, wurden Kroatien und weitere Teile des im Zerfall befindlichen Vielvölkerstaates für Jahre zum Schauplatz eines verheerenden Krieges.
