Pilot program for immigration brings 'skilled' workers to the region, Nelson

A federal government pilot program aimed at increasing immigration into rural and northern areas is entering its second year in the West Kootenay. Submitted
Despite the growing struggle for locals to find work in economic-restricted COVID-19 times, a federal government pilot program aimed at increasing immigration into rural and northern areas is entering its second year in the West Kootenay.
Called the Rural and North Immigration Pilot program (RNIP), the program launched May 11 in the West Kootenay region, noted Erin Rooney and Andrea Wilkey from Community Futures Central Kootenay (CFCK) in Nelson.
The West Kootenay region comprised of Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland and surrounding rural areas was designated as an “area of opportunity” that could benefit from the RNIP and a partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC). ....

The Province of British Columbia has proclaimed Family Literacy Week (January 24-31) in British Columbia.
Family Literacy Week is an annual B.C. campaign that recognizes the importance of family literacy. Family literacy means families learning together through everyday interactions in their lives; reading together, cooking together, talking together, singing together, playing together.
Last year was the first East Kootenay wide Great Big Buddy Read.
This event had older students paired with younger students to read together in schools across the East Kootenay.  This year the restrictions from Covid made this impossible, but the importance of reading together is just as significant as ever. ....

Chicken coop question resolved! And, Council got through a lot of other business in its final meetings of 2020.
Present:  Mayor Kathy Moore, and Councillors Terry Miller, Dirk Lewis, Chris Bowman, Janice Nightingale, Stewart Spooner, and Andy Morel.  Staff:  CAO Bryan Teasdale, DCO Cynthia Año Nuevo, CFO Elma Hamming, Manager of Special Projects Darrin Albo, Manager of Operations & Infrastructure Scott Lamont, Manager of  Recreation & Events Kristi Calder, and probably others who were not visible on the Zoom meeting.
Committee-of-the-Whole, 4:00 pm – 5:47 pm
Council discussed the merits of the thirteen applications for Community Grant Funding. Decisions made at this meeting are only recommendations, and tentative ones at that; Teasdale pointed out to Council that some of the COVID Safe Restart funding might be applicable to some of the applications but City staff and Council will have to ana ....
