'Rodney Scott's World of BBQ' Review: An Inspiring, Slow-Cooking Journey

My pal Riley Starks and I texted like a couple of kids as we figured out what to make from an exciting new barbecue cookbook, cross-referencing recipes with the food we could get our hands on and the equipment at our disposal.
The book,
Rodney Scott's World of BBQ: Recipes and Perspectives From the Legendary Pitmaster, by Rodney Scott and Lolis Eric Elie, is a publishing milestone, both good and bad. Here's why: It's one of the first cookbooks written by a Black pitmaster and published by a major US publisher—and

The Best Audiophile Gear: Headphones, Speakers, Amps, DACs

Take it from someone who records music: The world of high-end audio is often tainted with bullshit. Precious (and often snake-oily) materials and terms are exploited to sell products for inflated prices. Faux-science is deployed to trick you into thinking you need overpriced accessories like 2-inch-thick speaker cables.
Once you start shopping for gear that approaches the high three or low four figures, it's tough to distinguish what's good from what's simply good-looking. Never fear! I've spent thousands of hours listening to music in my acoustically treated home studio through many of the most loved high-end headphones, speakers, and amps on the market. Below you'll find my current favorites, and some information about what each item does.

Standing Desk Deal: Flexispot's Adjustable Desk Is $100 Off Today

Standing desks aren't the answer to the sitting epidemic—you should get moving instead—but they're a good way to stretch your legs if you work from home. The desk's adjustable height lets you add accessories like a walking treadmill underneath to rank up your daily step count or an under-desk bike if you want to try them. Adjustable-height desks are usually pricey, but one of our favorite affordable models, the Flexispot EN1, is currently on sale for $245.
This is the same model as the one in our Work-From-Home Gear guide, except it's slightly larger with a 55-inch surface area. You get three height presets, handy if more than one person will be using the desk, and it goes from 28 to around 48 inches tall. The single motor isn't too loud, and it doesn't wobble much, though don't expect it to move very fast. You can put up to 154 pounds of equipment on the desktop. I've been using the 48-inch version for more than half a year and it hasn't failed once.

The Dog Poodemic Is Here. Call in the Dung-Hunting Drones

They're hanging bags of canine excrement in the trees. Little black parcels of poo swinging gently in the breeze. It is one of the more unlikely consequences of the pandemic: a plague of dog shit, with no obvious solution in sight. And it stinks.

This story originally appeared on WIRED UK.
The rise is down to the sheer number of potential pet owners that rushed to realize the dream of owning a dog while in lockdown. Such was the demand, the price of puppies in the UK more than doubled last year, with popular breeds selling for more than £3,000 a pup. And with such money came the thieves and fraudsters.

Remote Weddings (and Memorials) Are Here to Stay. Be Prepared

Forbes magazine predicts that by 2025, an estimated 70 percent of the workforce will be toiling at home at least part-time. Also here to stay—in varying levels—are online learning, virtual social lives, and Zoom-based family celebrations.
You'd think after 15 months of being completely digital, it would get easier and not more complicated. Yet while I’m lucky to keep my dual jobs as an author and teacher, I’ve often been caught by surprise by the programs and platforms that have emerged during the pandemic.
One recent Saturday morning, I woke up early, showered, blow-dried my hair, applied makeup, put on a dress, and met my husband—wearing his nicest Armani jacket—at the laptop on my desk in New York. I called my mom in Florida, who’d been the only one at her beauty shop at 8 am. We were excited to see everyone at a Michigan family friend's online bar mitzvah. While a tad technophobic, this was not our first remote religious rodeo. I’d Zoomed in for a Christian memorial service for a former teacher. And my husband had been to another web-based Jewish rite of passage for a coworker's son at a different congregation. There he saluted the host and joked with his cohort before the camera cut away to the boy reading from the Torah.
