Westmoreland County will hand out nearly $4 million in grants to local restaurants and other hospitality businesses struggling to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic.
The money comes from the $145 million Pennsylvania Hospitality Industry Recovery Program approved by state lawmakers and Gov. Tom Wolf. Westmoreland is slated to receive $3.95 million.
Restaurants, taverns and hotels are among the businesses eligible for the grants.
“These are businesses that are hurting,” said Commissioner Sean Kertes. “This is going to help sustain those businesses until things can get back to normal.”

Security at Westmoreland County government facilities will be tightened as part of a $2.4 million project approved Thursday.
Commissioners unanimously approved a contract with Dagostino Electronic Services of Homestead to install new systems that consolidate cameras and other security features at the courthouse complex in Greensburg, Westmoreland Manor, the county jail, juvenile detention center and forensic facility in Hempfield, along with the public safety building and public works garage on Donahoe Road.
The new system will integrate and upgrade more than 2,000 digital security cameras at various county buildings and consolidate software to link each video feed into the same computer servers so they be accessed in multiple locations. The upgrades also call for installation of new door locks and security card readers, among other security equipment.

Westmoreland commissioners rescind covid grant to Salem gym, allow North Huntingdon to keep money

Westmoreland County commissioners on Tuesday rescinded a nearly $5,000 grant awarded last week to a Salem gym after it refused to accept a provision that requires recipients to pledge to adhere to state covid guidelines.
Officials said representatives of Matshark Fitness, which operates as Wallace Training Systems, declined to sign off on a contract required to accept the grant commissioners approved this month to help small businesses recoup losses and costs associated with pandemic.
Melissa Guiddy, county solicitor, said a signed contract is required before money is handed over. That contract requires entities that accept the money to “follow orders of the governor and state health department.”

Twenty-one nonprofit emergency medical service departments are in line to receive $15,000 covid-relief grants as part of a new round of awards unveiled Thursday by Westmoreland County commissioners.
Officials said nearly $400,000 remaining from grants earmarked for nonprofit agencies will be used to fund the program.
“We are under a tight timeline. They will be getting an application today and will have 48 hours to complete it and get it back to us so we can approve it next week,” Commissioner Gina Cerilli said.
