High demand for Kingston rental assistance


KINGSTON, N.Y. — Almost half of those applying for  COVID-19-related rental assistance are being rejected, an official said Monday.
Summer Smith, director of the city communications and community engagement, said that 125 applications have been submitted to RUPCO, an affordable housing agency, since the program was launched on Dec. 1.
Of those, 53 were denied.

“67% or the majority are renters outside the City of Kingston (and) 15% were either receiving a rental assistance subsidy, or not in arrears, and a couple could not produce adequate hardship,” Smith said in an email.
Smith said 15 have provided proper documentation and will be put into a lottery. RUPCO and the city hope to provide assistance to 20 to 25 households. ....
