Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has signed into law, a bill to protect birds from nocturnal night pollution. The “lights out” law requires all state-owned buildings in Connecticut to turn off nonessential outdoor lights after 11pm year-round. The law also directs the Connecticut Code and Standards committee to consider changes to lighting requirements in the state building code. The lights out policy is aimed at protecting nocturnal bird migrations because birds are attracted to bright lights at night. This can cause them to crash into buildings or exhaust themselves to death following lights that throw them off their migrations. Not only will the new law protect birds… it will also save money on the state’s energy bills. ....
