Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas Special, review: the vulgar comedy borrows a Royal heart of gold

Seeing the light: Mrs Brown (Brendan O'Carroll) was back for a 10th festive round

It was always going to take more than a pandemic to knock
Mrs Brown’s Boys (BBC One) off its stride. Britain’s favourite comedy – or so the ratings tell us – was back for a Christmas Special, and little had changed in the Brendan O’Carroll Expanded Universe. Depending on your tastes, this was either 30 minutes of post-turkey torture or a misty-eyed call back to the great sitcoms of yesteryear.
Covid had put a damper on certain elements. There was no studio audience to hoot along to the flubbed lines and single entendres as O’Carroll dusted down his manic “mammy” routine. And the cast had been significantly downsized, with most of Mrs Brown’s extended family absent.
