The real meat of the episode, though, still lay ahead. Some have criticised recent seasons of the show for resorting to thriller pyrotechnics – gunplay over nuance. That certainly wasn’t the case here. Instead, creator Jed Mercurio treated viewers to an attempt at achieving moral closure for the protagonists – which may tell its own story about whether or not Line of Duty has a future beyond this season. Many viewers harboured dark fears about Ted Hastings. Surely not Ted? Well, no. But there were undeniably questions to answer, and answer he did. The most affecting interrogation scene yet involved Hastings spilling his secrets relating to John Corbett’s death and Steph Corbett’s money, and trusting in Arnott and Kate Fleming, whose pained, “disappointed not angry” faces were at once amusing and mildly heartbreaking.

Line Of Duty star Nigel Boyle has defended the series six finale, after fans took to Twitter in droves to express their disappointment.
Fans across the nation were left underwhelmed and disappointed on Sunday night as the nail-biting series finale drew to a close – and the mysterious antagonist 'H' was finally unmasked as DSI Ian Buckells, played by Boyle.
And during an appearance on BBC Breakfast on Monday, Boyle insisted that fans of the hit show would grow to appreciate the ending over time, as he also revealed he'd only told his wife Lainy that he was the Fourth Man ahead of the finale.

Be honest, who saw that coming? Up until the moment we saw Buckells’s face, I was utterly convinced that Chief Constable Philip Osborne was the bent cop mastermind behind it all. Well played, Jed Mercurio. No, it was the bluffing, blustering, buffoonish Buckells (who I had my suspicions about in episode two – but I assumed he was bent, not “H”).
