Line Of Duty's Jed Mercurio says he keeps things flexible when writing the hit show - and storylines can change depending on the stars' schedules
It was revealed during Sunday night's eagerly-anticipated finale that The Fourth Man - also known as H - was Superintendent Ian Buckells
Initially portrayed as a hapless character, it was revealed that he was in fact the criminal mastermind who had formed the secret network of bent coppers
Many clues appear to have come to light since the show hit screens in 2012, including a real life note from actor Nigel Boyle, who tipped off fans in 2017

Line of Duty ending explained | Season 6 finale recap as H revealed

Sunday, 2nd May 2021 at 10:00 pm
Halfway through the Line of Duty season six finale, AC-12 finally found out the identity of ‘H’, or the “Fourth Man” who they had been chasing for so long. Did
we, the viewers, find out at the same time? No, we most certainly did not.

For another excruciating eight minutes, the team passed around print-outs and made cryptic remarks, exchanged knowing looks, and got sidetracked into other conversations. “All this time we’ve been chasing shadows! If this is right he’s been under our noses from the very beginning!” declared Steve. (Who was he talking about? Surely it’s Chief Constable Osborne, we thought.) And then we had a montage of armed officers drawing up to AC-12 and marching an unseen interviewee into the building, while DI Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) tap-tapped on his iPad and linked up the DIR. Of course, the camera pulled away before he typed in the name of the interviewee.

Did you hear that mass scream from sofas nationwide at around 9:34pm on Sunday? It was the sound of millions of blindsided Line Of Duty viewers exclaiming a single word. And that word was “Buckells?!”.
Yes, recurring character DSU Ian Buckells (played by Nigel Boyle) was at last unmasked as the corrupt cop pulling strings on behalf of organised crime. Once erroneously code-named H, latterly known as the Fourth Man and now forever associated with baffled cries of: “What the… Buckells? Are you sure? Yes but Buckells, though? Mother of God!”
Despite fan theories proliferating online, bookmakers taking bets and everyone having their own pet theory, the big Buckells reveal miraculously managed to still pull off a major surprise. But has writer Jed Mercurio been laying a nine-year, six-series trail of subtle hints all along?

When last man standing DSU Ian Buckells smugly asked Supt Ted Hastings if he’d like a glass of water, I honestly thought the gaffer might lean across the desk and punch that smirk clean off his face.

The six questions the Line of Duty finale must answer tonight

People across Britain are gearing up for the BBC's Line of Duty series finale tonight, with 12million viewers expected to tune in.
The show sees the officers of police anti-corruption unit AC-12 pitted against the mysterious antagonist known only as 'H' or 'the fourth man', who heads up an organised crime syndicate controlling events from the shadows and potentially from within AC-12 itself.
The series has gone from strength to strength since its release, growing from an initial audience of four million adults to more than 11million tuning in for the current series' penultimate episode.
Earlier this week, the BBC released a teaser trailer promising an action-packed finale complete with a police standoff, the return of balaclava men and the discovery of a written note with THAT 'definately' misspelling.
