Line Of Duty's Jed Mercurio reveals storylines can change depending on the stars' schedules

Line Of Duty's Jed Mercurio says he keeps things flexible when writing the hit show - and storylines can change depending on the stars' schedules
It was revealed during Sunday night's eagerly-anticipated finale that The Fourth Man - also known as H - was Superintendent Ian Buckells
Initially portrayed as a hapless character, it was revealed that he was in fact the criminal mastermind who had formed the secret network of bent coppers
Many clues appear to have come to light since the show hit screens in 2012, including a real life note from actor Nigel Boyle, who tipped off fans in 2017

Line Of Duty's creator Jed Mercurio reveals clue in series one that Ian Buckells was H

The series creator, 55, detailed how he dropped a sign the officer was bent back in 2012 after he allowed the caddy Dot Cottan to speak with Tommy Hunter alone in the back of a van.

Did you hear that mass scream from sofas nationwide at around 9:34pm on Sunday? It was the sound of millions of blindsided Line Of Duty viewers exclaiming a single word. And that word was “Buckells?!”.
Yes, recurring character DSU Ian Buckells (played by Nigel Boyle) was at last unmasked as the corrupt cop pulling strings on behalf of organised crime. Once erroneously code-named H, latterly known as the Fourth Man and now forever associated with baffled cries of: “What the… Buckells? Are you sure? Yes but Buckells, though? Mother of God!”
Despite fan theories proliferating online, bookmakers taking bets and everyone having their own pet theory, the big Buckells reveal miraculously managed to still pull off a major surprise. But has writer Jed Mercurio been laying a nine-year, six-series trail of subtle hints all along?

Online sleuths reckon they've solved the mystery of that Jimmy Nesbitt bait-and-switch
Halfway through this series of LoD, AC-12 zoned in on two previously peripheral characters as persons of interest: Chief Constable Philip Osborne, and Marcus Thurwell. We got all hyped up, ready for a surprise guest appearance from Jimmy Nesbitt as Thurwell, only to have our hopes dashed in episode six when he was discovered dead by Spanish police.
Did Jed Mercurio and Nesbitt create all that media speculation for just two mug shots of Nesbitt on a computer, with not even a second of actual camera time? Quite possibly. But some fans are convinced that it isn’t the last we’ll see of Thurwell, and that he could rise from the grave having faked his own death.

Does This Theory Solve the Mystery of the Fourth Man in Line of Duty?

With just one episode left of series six,
Line of Duty could theoretically go anywhere. After all, who had sweepstakes at the end of the last series on Kate Fleming finding old camera footage of Dot Cottan tapping out morse code signals with his fingers on his deathbed to reveal more about the arch-villain H? Exactly: absolutely no one.
While wild theories are always flying around online – which is half the fun of watching it, really – there are always a couple of out-there ideas as to where the plot will go, or the real life cases that inspired storylines, enabling us to predict the outcome of AC-12’s latest investigations.

Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey (Ted’s best statement of shock so far, IMO): what an episode of revelations. After
last week’s cliffhanger, it turns out our heroine, Kate Fleming, was left thankfully unscathed after the stand-off with chief little shit, Ryan Pilkington, and Ryan’s the one who ended up with two bullet holes to the chest and is now taking up space in the city morgue.

Who Are Philip Osborne and Marcus Thurwell in Line of Duty?

Tommy Hunter – he’s both her father
and her uncle, as fans
on Twitter were quick to spot – and that Jimmy Lakewell (RIP) said the name Lawrence Christopher was imperative to AC-12’s investigation, not to mention Kate Fleming and Ryan Pilkington being currently gun-to-gun after he admitted killing John Corbett and Maneet Bindra...it’s a lot to take in.
But after processing all seminar-worthy 60 minutes of plot advancement, there’s a few old and new persons of interest who we need to do a background check on, as it’s likely they’re going to become instrumental in the final two episodes of the series.
