Five artist collectives and no individual artists are on the shortlist for this year’s Turner Prize. The groups are Array Collective, Black Obsidian Sound System (B.O.S.S.), Cooking Sections, Gentle/Radical, and Project Art Works, all of whom are engaged in ‘what people sometimes call social practices’, says Alex Farquharson, chair of the judges and director of Tate Britain. The 2021 Turner Prize jury has selected a shortlist made entirely from artist collectives for the first time, Tate Britain, which organises the award, announced on Friday. The five groups all “work closely and continuously with communities across the breadth of the UK”, the organisers of the prestigious but often controversial visual arts prize said. “The collaborative practices selected for this year’s shortlist also reflect the solidarity and community demonstrated in response to the pandemic,” they added. In advance of the Tate Modern galleries' reopening (planned for May 17) in London, Beuys’ Acorns is a fresh installation representing ideas of regeneration, and is free for visitors to see outside the museum.  The installation of 100 oak saplings opened May 4 on the terrace outside Tate Modern.
