Louisiana has a category of off-the-grid schools that operate with hardly any oversight. Formally known as “nonpublic schools not seeking state approval,” most are tiny homeschools that serve a single family. But some are brick-and-mortar schoolhouses with dozens of students. Raynesha Cummings enrolled her three teenagers in one unapproved school, Second Chance Academy, with hopes of keeping them safe from COVID-19. She later found out that colleges would not recognize diplomas from the school, and says a teacher offered her daughter money for nude photos of herself.
