The famous Robert McLaughlin House could become a designated heritage property.
Councillor Jane Hurst, council’s representative on the Oshawa Heritage Advisory Committee, told members of the Development Services Committee Monday that the demonstration of support for heritage, especially with respect to the longstanding reputation and investment in Oshawa by the McLaughlin family, “isn’t going unnoticed.”
“This is an investment in recognition and celebration of great things that happened in Oshawa over the past 100 years,” she says. ....

Oshawa leading population growth, ranked a “best city” amid pandemic

Oshawa is becoming known as one of the fastest growing cities in the country.
According to Statistics Canada, the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) is leading the country in population growth.
Oshawa saw a 2.1 per cent population growth rate last year, followed by Halifax and Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo both at two per cent.
A CMA is defined as an area consisting of one or more neighbouring municipalities with a 100,000 population, situated around a core of at least 50,000. The Oshawa CMA includes Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington. ....

The Downtown Oshawa Business Improvement Area (BIA) will continue on.
Despite council voting to disband the organization at a special council meeting last week, the BIA remains in operation as council defeated a motion at Monday’s city council meeting to repeal Bylaw 94-74.
According to city solicitors, the BIA continues to exist because of Bylaw 94-74 and the repeal bylaw not being passed by council.
Councillor Brian Nicholson, who originally voted to disband the BIA, says the actions from council at Monday’s meeting were “utterly disrespectful.” ....
