COVID-19: Business owners share how they'll respond to Texas' face mask mandate lift

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Many people are trying to decide what they'll do next Wednesday when the state's mask mandate gets lifted.
Some leaders and health professionals across the city said it's still too soon, and one bar owner said lifting the order puts an unfair pressure on local businesses.
National businesses have already taken a stance in Texas, saying they will continue their corporate policy of requiring a mask for employees and customers.
The owner of Marquis II, a longtime staple in West University, said he's frustrated because making a decision one way or the other could have big implications.

H-E-B will keep face mask protocols in place even after mandate ends Wednesday

HOUSTON, Texas -- As small-business owners and managers across Texas went to work Wednesday morning, they faced yet another 2021 headache: deal with losing business from customers who don't want to wear face masks during the pandemic or from patrons who will only frequent places that require them.
Some businesses barely had an opportunity to reopen after last month's deadly winter storm and power outage crisis before hearing about this massive change to the state's COVID-19 safety protocols.
"I do feel that we'll probably lose guests based on whatever decision we do make, but I guess that's just part of the environment that we are in now," said Jessica Johnson, general manager of Sichuan House in San Antonio. "It's either you wear masks and piss a couple people off, or you don't wear masks and you piss a couple people off."

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- As COVID-19 vaccines continue to roll into Texas, there are growing concerns that access to the coveted shots are often dependent on how digitally connected people are. The better connect, the better chances of getting a vaccine.
On Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott highlighted the positive aspects of the vaccine rollout so far in a roundtable discussion at Houston Methodist Hospital. He pointed to the fact that more than 1.3 million doses have so far been given to Texans, and the state is set to distribute this week its largest shipment to date.
