One of the very popular adages in the Ghanaian society is that: “When the last tree dies, the last man dies.” 
Ironically, its meaning is seldom put into use as some people continue to destroy trees indiscriminately.
Undoubtedly, trees are life dependents of mankind, and without them nobody can survive on the earth.
However, a growing phenomenon in which the wildly growing shea trees are harvested for firewood and charcoal is gaining notoriety in the Upper West Region.
The tree, which serves as a major source of livelihood to the rural population, particularly women, has come under attack in recent times in the area trees are felled indiscriminately to burn charcoal and for firewood. ....

Philippines: Rights Body, Govt Probe Killings of 9 in Police Raids

The Philippine human rights commission and the government said Monday they were investigating anti-communist insurgency operations by police that killed nine people over the weekend.
Those slain during raids in four provinces on Sunday were vocal critics of the Duterte administration, human rights groups alleged, but government officials defended the raids and said they were justified.
“Activists are not necessarily terrorists,” lawyer Jacqueline de Guia, a spokeswoman for the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), said in a statement. 
“There should be a differentiation between those who take up arms and those who merely exercise their constitutional right to form and join associations, organizations as well as petition the government for redress of its grievances,” she said.  ....

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has backed away from a previous promise, made as recently as late last year, that he will remain leader for the next 10 years. The region’s longest-serving leader now says he will remain in office as long as he wants.
Speaking at a press conference after receiving a Covid-19 vaccination on March 4, Hun Sen said: “Now I stop speaking of running as premier for 10 or 20 years. I will be prime minister until I want to stop.” ....

Phnom Penh Municipal Court has sentenced former opposition leader Sam Rainsy to 25 years in prison and deprived him of the right to vote or stand as a candidate in upcoming elections for plotting to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The court also sentenced two senior figures from the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), Mu Sochua and Eng Chhay Eang, in absentia to 22 years behind bars. ....
