Review: Ys IX Monstrum Nox for Nintendo Switch | Technobubble Gaming

The Switch version loses some visual fidelity but makes up for it by granting the gift of portability to Ys IX players.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox Review - The Night Is Dark And Full Of Terrors

Falcom
Adol Christin, adventurer extraordinaire, doesn't know how to sit still. His unquenchable thirst for adventure brought him all over the known world and made him discover forgotten secrets while getting into all sorts of troubles. Fans of the series have loved getting out of all these troubles while in Adol's shoes, and they will love doing so once again in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. The latest entry in the series takes everything that made Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana such a great game and brings it to new heights.
This time around, Adol Christin travels to the ancient city of Balduq in Gllia together with his long-time friend Dogi. His stay in the city, however, doesn't stay very pleasant for long: right at the city gates, Adol gets recognized by Warden Belger, a Romun Imperial soldier who serves as the head warden of Balduq Prison. As fans of the series already known, Adol isn't particularly loved by the Romun Empire, often ending up getting in their way, and, as such, he is arrested for his involvement in several incidents.

One of the strengths of Nihon Falcom’s long-running Ys series is that, despite 30+ years of entries, any Ys game can be your first Ys game. With every sequel being another standalone adventure in the life of red-haired explorer Adol Christin, I’ve jumped around through the series in a pretty random order and still gotten a full and fulfilling experience out of each game. While Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, the latest entry in the series, is yet another self-contained experience, it’s also a very different experience compared to previous entries. Some of these differences come from gameplay and combat improvements that make this one of the strongest entries in the series, but Ys IX also plays with story development and world-building like the Ys games have never done before, crafting a narrative experience purposefully at odds with what a Ys game would typically deliver.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox Review - Breaking From the Prison of its Past

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox Review - Breaking From the Prison of its Past
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is several steps in the right direction for the series.
9.0
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is arguably the most ambitious
Ys title Nihon Falcom has released so far, with updated graphics and a much more in-depth (and darker) plotline. At its core, however, is still the soul of the much-beloved franchise but the changes implemented to both storytelling and gameplay make the experience a more refreshing one.
Our ever suffering hero Adol is traveling with his best friend and longtime companion Dogi to Balduq City when once again, he’s swept up in disaster. It seems that his many misadventures of past games have finally caught up to him and there’s a warrant for his arrest. Adol surrenders peacefully and is immediately shipped out to the city’s massive prison, subjected to constant interrogations and fellow inmates itching for a fight. But in true Adol fashion he quickly breaks out, only to dive headfirst from the pan of imprisonment and into the flames of rapidly rising stakes.
