These are very smart critters. they learn, they discover, they make those discoveries and share them with other members of their community. and jeff, are they also very playful figures because one theory that i saw floating around is maybe some of these are just young orcas who are being playful. what do you think about that theory? absolutely. play is a big part of their lives. they like to be stimulated by the environment. we see them play with sharks, with other creatures, they will play with seaweed. all sorts of things. because when you have the big brain, you need a lot of stimulation going on or you get bored. so i do believe there maybe some play involved here with these whales, but i think it originates from one whale that had this negative encounter with a sailboat, has learned from that and is sharing that novel behavior on to other members of her community. it s amazing. ....
Big trees inspire me. In part, it’s their age, but it’s also their size. I was in Agate Bay at Lake Tahoe recently staying with a friend. Outside the back door is one of the biggest Jeffrey pines I have seen. It’s massive and regal. ....
There are other ones more difficult than this? we have had some alligators in the roadway that have been difficult over the years. we have dealt with giant pythons and escaped monkeys. there s been a lot of things on that list. but i ve loved every moment of it and for whatever reason it seems like it s easier now than it s ever been. john: so your website lists a large collection of critters that you have gone after. racoons, iguanas, the odd possum, but when you get a call particularly at 2:00 in the morning about a gator or a crocodile in a pool, what goes through your mind as you are heading to the job? well, one is to stay focused and get awake. i had only been asleep about three hours when that call came in, so you know there s going to be a battle. you just don t know how it s going to unfold yet and it changes every second. ....
