Pine siskins face a deadly dilemma in the San Antonio area this spring.
The small songbirds with muted brown and yellow plumage are taking the brunt of a spike in salmonellosis, an infection caused by the salmonella bacteria. Local residents have found dead pine siskins and other finches near their bird feeders.
Wildlife experts recommend cleaning feeders regularly or pulling them down entirely to prevent the spread of the disease. But those same feeders are seeing more hungry migratory birds than ever after a winter freeze that decimated Texas plants. ....

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo received a failing grade from students for his newest budget proposal that would increase tuition to attend state colleges and universities while decreasing state funding.
Standing outside his New York City office, members of the State University of New York Student Assembly and student representatives of the City University of New York presented the governor his report card.
“We gave a couple of ‘Fs’ because, quite frankly, it’s a failure to increase tuition on public higher education students in the middle of the pandemic. It’s clear that is not the right choice to make,” Student Assembly President Brad Hershenson said. ....

Waiting to Exhale: Students, Faculty, and Staff Reflect a Year After the COVID Shutdown

It has been a year since COVID altered life at CUNY, and life in general. Once we gathered in classrooms, hallways, and cafeterias. Now we gather largely on Zoom. Too many of us have lost loved ones and treasured colleagues or faced financial hardship and uncertainty, or both. More of us have had to change the ways we work, teach, learn, and spend time with families and friends.
To take stock of this year and what lies ahead, we invited Graduate Center students, faculty, and staff to share their experiences. A nursing Ph.D. student described how the 7 p.m. cheer made her feel. Our chief librarian helped kids find solace in cats. A student canceled her dissertation research trip and reconfigured her project.  ....

From 1998 until January 2021, Professor Thomas C. Spear edited Île en île, an extensive virtual archive of literature from French-speaking islands and their diasporas. Although there will no longer be updates or new material, the entire Île en île archive remains accessible online. Today on WWB Daily, Professor Spear speaks with us about the evolution of Île en île over more than two decades and recommends some of his favorite authors in the archive, many of whom have yet to be translated into English. ....

Former President
     William P. Kelly
The establishment of The Graduate Center in 1961 by the New York State Legislature, itself, had few precedents. This was to be the first publicly supported doctoral program in New York City.
It was a bold move that grew out of the historic commitment to public higher education in New York City, the need to provide advanced education for the growing post-World War II baby boom population, and the mission that defines The Graduate Center graduate education for the public good. ....
