Therefore i don t think the republicans were going to come to the middle and say you give us that cut in the enadvertisements, and we ll give you a little more taxes. i don t think there was any more give on either of those, not just the taxes. i don t think the republicans ever deep down wanted to cut the entitlements because there is no politics in it there just isn t. i think that some of the republicans do. the ones i would disagree with you on are people like paul ryan, who have a very dock stricken view of wanting to go after medicare. the purists. exactly. and there is a very small minority. that s why it was so risky to put him on the ticket because he is really a zealot when it comes to cutting entitlements. i think you re right on the main republicans have decided their best political position is stasis where they are now. i think they understand this, present new policy that is going to irritate their base with let s face it older americans. their base is much older. s ....
Congress. and hopefully we ve learned the lesson. we re not going to put the american economy on the brink once again. i know. i can just see your cynicism. but i think there is a committed group including the 12 or now 13 that met in susan collins office who know that this needs to be taken care of. so as we bring in more people, as more and more moderates speak out, i m encouraged in the future. obviously i am cynical. you re right about that. but, you know, there are moderates like you who and i don t want to in any way underminor demean those efforts, but you have been stymied by radicals of both parties. you have been. do you really think you can get this done? i mean, and this is a big deal. this is a big deal with cutting entitlements, dealing with taxes. that s what it s going to take. i would tell you that one of the things that s in this deal is getting back to regular order. ....

These programs in the face of the democratic challenges and pressures they re under. i understand you are sympathetic to cutting entitlements. i am not. i am very sympathetic to these guys demands and leaving social security alone ch just as a matter of political tactic, what is the most effective form of pressure that you have seen base activists use against their own side. republicans have been dealing with these kinds of fights on the right for a long time. democrats don t much have to deal with this. if you look at the bush administration and president obama from a polling perspective is roughly where president bush was in any one of a number of polls at this point in his second term. president bush took on his base and really two big fights. the first was an immigration fight, the base prevailed and then there was tremendous over the race of harriet miers in 2005. the president was not able to amass a coalition, the center of the center left of the center right that was able ....
