"I want to thank Minister Olivia Grange for her help in organising the viewing. Soul Jah Love's life of multitudes

This story was first published inNew Frame.
In mapping out the legacy of Soul Jah Love, the Zimdancehall star who died on 16 February 2021 at 31 of diabetes complications, one naturally has to go to Jamaica – the island which gave the world the idiom of rap-style chanting. An obvious reference is U Roy, the Jamaican prototypical DJ who also died last February, at the age of 78.
Even though Daddy U-Roy, as he was affectionately known, didn’t invent the toasting style which later morphed into rap when it got to the United States (before him, Count Machuki had been doing it), it was when the DJ had the microphone in his hands that the form became commercially viable. This is why U-Roy is sometimes described as the “originator” because, as he said – referring to his chart-topping studio hits – “I’m the first man who put DJ rap on wax, you know.” What has come to be a staple radio jingle, for instance, the couplet, “This station/ rules the nation,” was first chanted by U-Roy on King Tubby’s and, later, Duke Reid’s sound systems.

Exodus: Three reggae greats died in the past three week...

Bunny Wailer, the last of the original Wailing Wailers, died of a stroke at the age of 73 last week. He and his childhood friend Bob Marley formed a vocal trio with a young Peter Tosh in 1963, a year after Jamaica’s independence. Their harmonious singing style was typical of the ska music genre — upbeat music that defined the cultural mood of a new freedom, similar to the way Kwaito music articulated the new spirit of 90s South Africa.
Ska’s time was a world at the height of the cold war, the atomic age, national liberation struggles and victories, the US civil rights movement and Vietnam. Against this backdrop, ska fiercely celebrated and questioned the new Jamaican society, with popular songs of love and common injustice influenced by the sounds of the day; R&B and jazz from American radio, Jamaican folk and gospel style, and even colonial marching band music mostly heard in the horn riffs.

“Here I come, with love and not hatred,” sang Dennis Emmanuel Brown on his 1977 classic “Here I Come,” a.k.a. “Love & Hate,” one of the songs that earned him the title the Crown Prince of Reggae. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow I,” Dennis went on, “all the days of I life.”
His musical mantra rings truer than ever in these crazy times — and especially during Reggae Month, the annual celebration that coincides with a pair of royal birthdays during the first week of February. The Crown Prince’s earthstrong begins the month — Dennis was born Feb. 1, 1957 — followed five days later by the King of Reggae himself, Robert Nesta Marley, born Feb. 6, 1945.
