NFL Draft 2021: Trevor Lawrence is the obvious choice for the Jaguars at No. 1

Welcome to the first overall pick in our 2021 SB Nation writers’ mock draft. It’s not even remotely a surprise. Big Cat Country, on behalf of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has selected former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
This pick might be an easier one to make than last year’s No. 1 overall selection in Joe Burrow, now with the Cincinnati Bengals. Trevor Lawrence has been perceived as an eventual top draft pick since his years at the high school level. He is a generational talent with all of the tools, including his arm talent, athleticism, size, and ability to read a defense, and he has the winning pedigree to impress any and all observers.

The 2021 NFL Draft is merely 60 days away! Let’s pass the time together until then by looking at who mock drafts have the Philadelphia Eagles taking with the No. 6 overall pick.

After trading away Carson Wentz, 2020 second-round pick Jalen Hurts tops the Eagles’ quarterback depth chart. And my feeling is that he has earned a chance to start in Week 1 next season and try to be Philly’s long-term answer, even though he completed just 52% of his passes last season. The Eagles have major salary-cap issues, and this is not going to be a one-year rebuild for new coach Nick Sirianni. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re picking in the top 10 next year as well. Drafting Chase here will allow a better evaluation of Hurts in 2021; he’s a true No. 1 wideout with a high ceiling. After opting out of the 2020 season, Chase will get a chance to work out for teams at LSU’s pro day on March 31, and there’s a chance he could wow scouts and coaches there and end up as the No. 1 receiver in this class.

It has been about a month since we last check in with our friend Dan Kadar and his weekly 2021 NFL Mock Draft. Back near the end of January, Kadar projected the Miami Dolphins to use the third-overall selection to add LSU wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, then come back and use the 18th-overall pick on Minnesota wide receiver Rashod Bateman. Does he still think Miami could double-down on the wide out position?
Released earlier today in the Akrom Beacon Journal, Kadar’s latest mock starts right where the actual Draft should start, with the Jacksonville Jaguars selecting Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. If that is not how the selection process begins in April, shocking would not be enough of an adjective to describe it. The second pick, belonging the to the New York Jets, will likely be a quarterback as well, though there does seem to be some discussion the Jets could stick with Sam Darnold and use this pick to build around him.
