School district residents go to the polls on May 18 to vote on budgets and members of their local boards for the coming school year. Below are the details on the ballots in 124 districts. Results will be posted here as they become available.

The Great Neck, Lawrence, Hewlett-Woodmere and West Hempstead districts received permission from the state to hold voting on May 11, before the statewide date of May 18, which is also the date of the Jewish holiday Shavuot.

Stimulus funds expected to help with pandemic-related costs for East End districts


An influx of stimulus funding is expected to begin flowing to local schools under the American Rescue Plan signed by President Joe Biden last month.
The $1.9 trillion stimulus package included aid to local governments and direct checks to most Americans. It also included $120 billion in funding for education, with Long Island schools slated to receive nearly $324 million in rescue aid, according to figures released by Sen. Charles Schumer’s office.
While details on the parameters of those funds, which would largely be allocated based on the number of students living below the poverty line, are still emerging, local superintendents embraced the idea of additional funding. Schools will also receive increased federal aid from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, according to state aid projections. ....

Greenport school budget may pierce tax cap

To close a projected $500,000 shortfall, the Greenport Board of Education may look to pierce the tax cap as budget planning gets underway for 2021-22.
The proposed $20.5 million spending plan represents a 2.47% increase over last year’s $20.1 million plan. The district’s tax levy cap is currently set at 1.56%, though officials have presented a 4.85% tax levy increase in order to balance the budget.
In an interview Monday, assistant superintendent for business Charles Scheid said he presented the option of piercing the cap as one option for the Board of Education to consider as he continues working with administrators to remain within the cap. ....
