The date was Jan. 4, 2013, when Matthew Freitas, 11, was a passenger in a car accident that resulted in his right leg being amputated below the knee. “It would save me a lot of pain,” Freitas says. “But short answer is ‘No.’ I absolutely wouldn’t. It made me who I am today.”
