That's not really an either/or question. Oxy Propane is a high temperature, but localised flame, and can cause issues by melting tubes or tube plates if not used carefully while propane is a slightly cooler flame, but bigger and with a lot more heat capacity. I would suggest that an oxy propane kit is something useful to have in the workshop for brazing as against silver soldering, but for more heat on a boiler a second propane is probably a better bet and is half the price of the oxy kit. I am embarking on my first work with castings, a Stuart 10V. I am attempting to do this as described in the 'Vertical Steam Engine' book that came with the kit, that is to say - mounting the castings in the four jaw and facing them using the slowest open gear. I'm getting a nice finish in areas where there is broadly continuous surface, but in the areas of interrupted cuts it's all gone a bit wrong. Arthur, to minimize the risk of ongoing frustration, can you at least show us a close-up photo of the parts in the position you were attempting to solder them in, and also of your torch alongside? I'm sceptical whether getting the parts bright red as opposed to dull red was the solution you needed; your torch being too small and/or being directed at and played over the parts in a less than optimal way, or your joints being too gappy or too tight or too dirty are a more likely cause of failure.
