A reported tornado ripped through Fultondale Monday night, killing a teenager, critically injuring several other people and leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
The teenager killed was a 14-year-old in the ninth grade, according to Jefferson County Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin. He said they’re trying to determine how many students may be homeless now. Fultondale High School was so heavily damaged that he doubts students can return to classrooms this year.
Fultondale Mayor Larry Holcomb said the storm - which hit the northern Jefferson County city about 10:30 p.m. - cut a quarter-mile wide swath after touching down near Interstate 65.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, Ala., said the severe storm impacted the Fultondale area of Jefferson County, causing "significant damage."
"We will inspect the damage to determine the strength of the tornado," the NWS wrote on Twitter.
Fultondale Police Chief D.P. Smith said a young man was killed when he was trapped in the basement of his home, according to AL.com.

It moved northeast toward Fultondale High School where there is substantial damage. Multiple businesses - such as Hurst Towing and the Hampton Inn were destroyed, as well as most everything in between.

Some Alabama residents are still trapped inside their homes after a tornado ripped through the state, killing at least one person, critically injuring several others and collapsing multiple buildings.
The storm hit the city of Birmingham, Alabama, at around 10:30pm on Monday, and specifically caused substantial damage in the suburb of Fultondale, according to AL.com.
Multiple businesses in Fultondale, including the Hampton Inn and Hurst Towing, were destroyed, as several homes collapsed during the storm.
Fultondale Police Chief DP Smith confirmed to AL.com on Monday morning that a young man was killed during the tornado, after he was trapped in his basement when his home collapsed.
